Austin is a great town. That's the last time you'll see the word great in this website. Except for that time. Shoot. 

The History of Austin is full of colorful characters, and amazing stories, Just ask O'Henry, or J. Frank Dobie. The city and it's citizens have changed in innumerable ways, while still maintaining the distinctness that separates Austin from any other city in the great state of Texas. There's that word again. Oh, never mind.

PRE 1780's-Tonkawas, Comanches, and Lipan Apaches hunt and camp in the Hill Country and at what is now Barton Springs.

1780's- Spain sets up missions in the area.

1830- Settlement of Waterloo is established by Anglo settlers.

1839- Waterloo is chosen as the capital for the Republic of Texas. In October the government is moved from Houston to the small town in a wilderness, newly named after Stephen F. Austin.

1840- Town swells to population 856.

1845- Texas joins the United States. After two statewide elections on the matter, Austin remains the capital.
